Art & Poetry

When Art and Poetry Coincide – Part I

With Chris Wiscarson and Gregory Dowling

In Part I on Tuesday 5 October, we will see how the story of Icarus inspired artists Rubens, van Dyck, Frederic Leighton, Henri Matisse; and Pieter Brueghel, who in turn inspired Pulitzer Prize winners W H Auden as well as William Carlos Williams, one of America’s greatest 20th century poets.

In Part II on Tuesday 12 October, we will see how Picasso’s Blue Period inspired another Pulitzer Prize winner, Wallace Stevens. And we will see how Williams’ poetry and Picasso’s Cubism foreshadowed Pop Art which was to follow some thirty years later.
We will explore how events can provoke artists and poets alike to produce astounding words and imagery, the impact on us penetrating and unforgettable.
