Long before it became subsumed in the Venetian empire, the Veneto was culturally and politically important. Not much is known about the Paleoveneti, apart from their horse breeding and trade in amber; Livy describes Patavium as being founded by the Trojan Antenor, while Polybius says they were influenced by Celts who settled in the area. Famously conservative in the Roman period, the Veneto produced two significant writers, Livy and Catullus, as well as significant monuments such as the Arena of Verona, whose scale is an indication of the city’s wealth. This city’s importance continued in the mediaeval period, as the Scaligers, the ruling family of Verona, captured much of the Veneto. This virtual tour will explore the political and artistic history of this thriving Italian region, exploring such gems as Giotto’s masterpiece, the Scrovegni chapel, as well as the Roman ruins in Verona.
