Art & Poetry

Revolutions in Art and Poetry – 1900 to 1925 – Part II

With Chris Wiscarson and Gregory Dowling

This time one hundred years ago, the world became modern: Einstein brought to us Relativity and E = mc2, Freud brought to us psychoanalysis and its seminal application in treating PTSD through the First World War, and Henry Ford brought to us the Model T and its production lines. Science and industry seemed at the very forefront of modern consciousness.
But this was only one side of the story. Through the 19th century, poetry and art had been breaking new ground with Walt Whitman redefining poetry as the impressionists were redefining  painting. They opened the doors for the revolution that was to come in the early years of the 20th Century through, most famously, T S Eliot’s The Waste Land and Picasso’s Cubism.
We will look at some of the most extraordinary poems and paintings of the period which set the standard for everything that came after.

These lectures look at how Art & Poetry have influenced each other over the centuries, and how events can provoke artists and poets alike to produce astounding words and imagery, the impact on us penetrating and unforgettable.
